Collagen and Heart Health: What’s the Connection?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

We’ve all heard the terrible statistics: heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control [1], one in four deaths in the U.S. is caused by it. Just this year alone, that translates to around 610,000 deaths.

We all know heart disease is a big problem, but what can we do about it? You likely already know that diet and lifestyle changes are a must for anyone who is suffering from cardiovascular system issues. What you might not know is that there’s a connection between collagen and heart health. Research shows that supplementation with quality collagen products can provide significant benefit.

Atherosclerosis: How Heart Disease Gets Out of Hand

As with most chronic illnesses, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke develop slowly over time as a result of poor lifestyle and dietary choices. The first stage for many people is atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a condition where the blood vessels which transport nutrients and oxygen from your heart to the rest of your body become stiff and thick. This is also called “hardening of the arteries.” In the cardiovascular system, atherosclerosis can lead to coronary artery disease or carotid artery disease.

Atherosclerosis Affects More Than Just the Heart

The bad news is that atherosclerosis can affect more than just your heart. It can also lead to restricted blood flow in other organs and tissues. This, in turn, can lead to peripheral artery disease (such as when blood flow is restricted in an arm or leg), chronic kidney disease [2], or, if blood circulation and oxygen is restricted to the brain – to stroke.

Healthy arteries are elastic and flexible. Over time, however, artery walls can turn hard. Much of this has to do with a lifetime of poor diet, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle. In fact, the Mayo Clinic says that the four most important things a person can do to either prevent heart attack or heal the precursors to one are [3]:

  1. Quitting smoking
  2. Regular exercise
  3. Maintaining a healthy weight
  4. Eating healthy foods

Acting on any one of these factors can change your health for the better in all ways.

What Is Collagen Used for in Your Body?

There is another factor in artery hardening, however, that is hard to avoid – age. This is where collagen and collagen supplementation comes in.

You may have heard about the importance of collagen for healthy skin, but did you know that collagen is the substance that makes up most tissues in the body? This goes for the tissues that make up all your major organs and your arteries.

Collagen is the most abundant type of protein in the body. You can think of it as the “glue” that keeps your whole body together. Collagen provides the framework for the arteries. As we age, however, collagen production reduces dramatically. According to investigations by the University of Michigan [4] as well as others [5], after roughly age 20, the average person produces about one percent less collagen in the skin and other areas of the body each year.

This is the main reason for wrinkly, sagging skin, but that’s not all. As we age, there is also less collagen available to provide a flexible, elastic, healthy structure for blood flow through the arteries. Research on several fronts has long found that lower collagen production can lead to a weakening of arterial walls [6]. This leaves the door open for other substances to create plaque build-up along artery walls and the development of atherosclerosis.

The Research Behind Collagen and Heart Health

As mentioned before, there are many things you can do (and stop doing) to help your heart. There is mounting evidence that adding collagen supplementation to your daily regimen as you age may be one of them.

Among the research is a Japanese study published in the Journal of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis [7]. Researchers from Kanazawa Medical University in Ishikawa, Japan, found that artery stiffness went down considerably in adults who took 16 daily grams of collagen tripeptide for six months (when compared to their stiffness rates at the beginning of the trial).

Interestingly, the same study found that the participants also increased their level of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels (the “good” kind of cholesterol) by roughly six percent across the board while they were supplementing with collagen.

Low HDL levels may be another risk factor for atherosclerosis. Investigations conducted at the University of Adelaide in Australia [8] found that higher levels of HDL may actually provide a protective mechanism against heart disease.

Get the Highest Quality Collagen Supplement for Your Heart

If you’re considering collagen protein supplementation for heart health, skin health, and more, there are a few things you should know.

First of all, be sure that your supplement comes in the form of a collagen peptide. Collagen peptides have been processed using “enzymatic hydrolysis [9]” which break down collagen fibrils into smaller parts for easier absorbency. Other names for collagen peptides are “hydrolyzed collagen” and “collagen hydrolysate.”

Secondly, your heart-healthy collagen product should contain more than one type of collagen from a variety of different sources, such as chicken, beef, and fish. In addition, a quality supplement will also contain additional nutrients that can act as catalysts for collagen absorption, such as vitamin C and zinc.

Finally, keep in mind that there are a lot of collagen products out there. Only certain kinds, however, are completely free from additives and come from clean-sourced beef and other animal products. A recent study from the non-profit Consumer Wellness Center found that collagen products that came from non-organic sources (also called CAFOs, or concentrated animal feeding operations) contained dozens of toxic ingredients, including parabens, steroids, antibiotics, and insecticides [10]. The best collagen supplement is meant to help your health, not hurt it!

You don’t have to be a statistic. You can help protect your heart and your health by upping your collagen levels naturally as well as supplementing with high-quality collagen powder regularly.

Organixx Clean Sourced Collagens blend contains five types of collagen from four sources. What’s more, it’s combined with targeted nutrients such as zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 which specifically enhance the bioavailability and potency of collagen. Clean Sourced Collagens is formulated from the ground up to enhance and support your body’s natural ability to heal and rebuild itself from the INSIDE out.

  1. IT IS NOT CLEAR WHY COLLAGEN IS GOOD FOUR YOUR HEART. WHY ARE GOOD AND OTHER BAd.

    thanks,

    Alvaro,

    • Hi Nina, thanks for your question. According to our online search, trans fat is related to hydrogenated oil and not hydrolyzed collagen. According to Mayo Clinic, most trans fat is formed through an industrial process that adds hydrogen to vegetable oil that causes the oil to become solid at room temperature.

The following information is from our article on choosing the best collagen supplement (https://organixx.com/best-collagen-supplement/)

Most digestible collagen supplements worth their weight come in the form of “collagen peptides.” A peptide is a small cluster of amino acids which are linked together in a chain formation. Collagen peptides form together to create collagen fibrils, or elongated fibers. It is these fibrils that eventually come together to create tissue in the body that you can see with the naked eye.

Supplements that contain collagen peptides use a special process called “enzymatic hydrolysis” [3] to break down fibrils into smaller parts. This helps your body to absorb its nutrients in a faster, more efficient manner.

Other names for collagen peptide include “hydrolyzed collagen” and “collagen hydrolysate.”

      We hope this helped!

    • Hi Brenda, thank you for reaching out to us!

The suggested dosage for the Clean Sourced Collagens is one scoop (8.5 g) daily. One canister has a net weight of 255 g. and should last you 30 days.

We appreciate the kind words you have for our team and we wish you a wonderful Christmas as well!

      • Hello, I would like to know how much of each type of collagen we are getting. Is it true that having all 5 is an over-load for our bodies. Are we able to absorb all of this. How does this compare to some of the other types that are on the market such as Spring of Life for example? There are so many options to choose from.

        • Thanks for your question, Laura!

Unfortunately, we do not give information on individual quantities of ingredients in our blends other than what is listed on the label because it is proprietary information.

In order to deliver everything your body needs, we don’t just use one type of collagen, our Organixx Clean Sourced Collagens contains Type 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10.

However, most supplements do NOT include all five types. Usually, they give you just one or two types. This means your body can only use that type of collagen for the specific role that type plays. So you don’t get the entire spectrum of age-defying benefits all five of the major types can provide.

  7. I just purchased your Collagen (6 bottles) days ago and I’m planning to buy the Multi Vita Maxx now. My question is.. Don’t I get overdosed with vitamins & minerals if I took both supplements SIMULTANEOUSLY?

    • Hi Tony, thank you for your recent purchase.

We would be more than happy to answer your question about consuming several Organixx products at the same time.

Organixx researches and develops a broad range of nutritional supplements to assist people in accomplishing a wide range of health goals. Some of our supplements are developed and designed to be taken together, as a system. Others were created for a more specific, targeted health goal.

While most should have no issue consuming all of our nutritional supplements together, it is always a wise step to consult with your primary healthcare practitioner related to your own unique health needs and health challenges. When taking multiple products in conjunction with one another, you can always start slowly with smaller doses and gradually work your way up to the recommended dosage per product.

To add, we published an article recently on how you can get the best results from your Organixx supplements.

We’d love for you to check it out here: https://organixx.com/supplement-product-review/.

We hope this helps and wish you all the best on your wellness journey!!

  8. I see that ingredients are sourced from non GMO chicken. While good, not nearly as safe from toxics as certified organic as they can be fed all sorts of contaminated food and still be classed non GMO. Also, are beef pasture FINISHED or pasture raised to be contaminated just before slaughter by feedlots?? The fact of your BRAND (Organixx) name implies “organic”- which is great marketing but may not be the truth of all of your products.

    • Hi Theresa, thank you for your feedback. We understand your concerns regarding the quality of our products.

Our Chicken is from non-GMO Chicken bone broth. While we are not involved in the feeding and care of the chickens, the bone broth we use is tested for all heavy metal, pesticide, herbicide, antibiotics, molds, e-coli, salmonella, and other environmental toxins.

To add, our products go through thorough microbiology, heavy metal, pesticide and common allergen testing. It is tested to be free from GMOs, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, molds, e-coli, salmonella and other environmental toxins and we are very satisfied that those results line up with or exceed the organic standards.

We would love for you to learn more about our company and our products on this page: https://organixx.com/. If you have more questions for us, we would be happy to answer them for you.

We appreciate your interest and we wish you a great day!

  9. I’m stressing out on supplements! If I took all the supplements recommended to me, there wouldn’t be any space left for actual food. It sounds like you have a great product, but I already eat a lot of the foods you use as collagen sources, I don’t smoke or drink, exercise every day, and at 76 with a limited budget, would prefer to get my collagen in a balanced and natural way from foods. Can you give me some advice on that?
    Thanks so much!

    • Hello George, thank you for your feedback!

  11. The Japanese study you cite used 16 grams/day to produce results, yet you recommend 8.5 grams as a daily dose. Why the discrepancy, I wonder. Certainly 8.5 is more affordable than 16, but is there any evidence that it is enough to be effective as your essay suggests?

    • Thank you for your feedback, Bessie.

The suggested serving of the Clean Sourced Collagens is 8.5 g daily. However, some individuals may want to take an advanced dosage of 2-3 servings per day. With this, we recommend starting at 1 serving a day, but individuals may take more in accordance with the advice and guidance of your primary healthcare practitioner.

The study we cited may be more the norm and it is possible for other individuals to need 2 servings a day. Since each person is different, we would recommend starting with one serving and go from there.
