Ask most people what creatine is for, and the answer comes quickly: building muscle, improving gym performance, recovery after hard training. The image is familiar – and for a long time, it kept a lot of people from looking any further. 

That’s a shame. Because the research on creatine extends well beyond the gym, into territory that’s considerably more relevant to the way most adults over 40 actually live – and particularly to something that rarely gets factored into supplement decisions at all: cognitive health.

These aren’t separate from the rest of your health, and they’re not beyond the reach of nutritional support. The science on creatine and the brain is more developed, more specific, and more compelling than most people realize – and it sits alongside a physical evidence base that makes creatine one of the most well-rounded supplements available for healthy aging. 

What Creatine Does in the Brain 

Most people understand creatine as a muscle supplement. What’s less understood is that the same mechanism driving its physical benefits – ATP regeneration – operates just as importantly in the brain.

A separate study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that oral creatine monohydrate supplementation improved working memory and general intelligence test scores in healthy adults, with the effect attributed directly to increased phosphocreatine availability in brain tissue [2]. 

Perhaps most significant for women: a 2021 review examining creatine across the female lifespan found that women’s naturally lower creatine stores – approximately 70–80% of men’s baseline levels – may make cognitive changes during and after the menopause transition more pronounced [3]. The same review found that supplementation showed particular promise for supporting memory and cognitive resilience in post-menopausal women – a population for whom the cognitive shifts of midlife are often as significant as the physical ones, and for whom creatine has historically been the most underutilized. 

The Physical Case Is Just as Strong 

The cognitive case alone would make creatine worth considering. But it sits alongside a physical evidence base that’s equally strong – and equally relevant to what women over 40 are dealing with day to day. 

Muscle maintenance. After around age 30, the body begins losing muscle mass gradually – a process that accelerates after 50. Research consistently shows that creatine supplementation supports lean muscle maintenance and functional strength in older adults, with a meta-analysis in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research finding meaningful improvements compared to exercise alone [4]. Staying strong, capable, and physically independent as the decades pass is one of the most important things creatine supports – and one of the least-discussed outside of athletic contexts. 

Energy. Creatine’s ATP support isn’t limited to the gym or to cognitive tasks. It operates at the cellular level across the body – which is why adequate creatine availability translates to better everyday energy, not just better workout performance. The mid-afternoon slump, the sense that you’re working harder for the same output – these reflect the same underlying energy system that creatine directly supports. 

Recovery. Research consistently shows that creatine supports faster restoration of muscle function after physical exertion [4]. As natural recovery windows lengthen with age, this matters increasingly – less soreness, quicker return to full capacity, more consistency in staying active over time. 

Bone health. A 2015 review found that creatine supplementation in combination with resistance training was associated with greater improvements in bone mineral density in older adults compared to training alone [5] – a finding particularly relevant for women post-menopause, for whom bone density is a growing health priority.

Creatine’s evidence base spans all three of those areas, which is why its relevance to women at this life stage is more significant than the supplement’s gym-focused reputation would suggest. For a population starting from a lower baseline and facing a steeper age-related decline, the case for supplementation is arguably stronger here than anywhere else.
