Dr. Daniel Nuzum: Vitamin D deficiency. What does that look like?
Well, with vitamin D3 in particular, vitamin D3 deficiency you have infertility. Vitamin D3 has an orchestration effect on the hormonal system of both men and women. So, both sides of our race need Vitamin D3 to help orchestrate and organize our hormonal system. When we’re vitamin D3 deficient, our hormones can easily find a way to get out of whack. And that directly affects fertility. Number one.
Bone issues, and bone pain, even. There are people that will see sometimes in their bones with; their long bones will hurt. It’s not a ligament issue. It’s not a muscular issue. The actual bone hurts. That is a vitamin D3 deficiency. That’s another sign or symptom of a vitamin D3 deficiency.
We have fatigue, and chronic infections are a couple of other signs and symptom. Fatigue’s a symptom, but chronic infections are a sign of Vitamin D3 deficiency. So, fatigue.
And a lot of times that goes back to our hormones but in particular our thyroid. Vitamin D3 plays a huge role in the production of and in the metabolization of thyroid hormones. So, either the hormones aren’t being produced properly, or they’re not being metabolized properly, vitamin D3 could definitely be one of the components there causing that issue.
In chronic infections, when our vitamin D3 is deficient, there are different enzymes that are vitamin D3 dependent. They’re dependent on our body having enough vitamin D3. And those enzymes help to activate and mobilize our immunity, our immune system.
So chronic infections are another sign of—or chronic or very consistent infection, someone that’s just, I mean someone sneezes and then they have pneumonia or something. Those people that are just always sick from something. They always have something going on. That’s that person typically is vitamin D deficient.
Another thing is allergies, and it’s all in that same—kind of that same category. People that are either immunodeficient and they catch every bug that comes along, or those that are—their immune system is just kind of in an inflammatory state, their immune systems always inflamed and irritated about something, right? We call those allergies, right? Those folks tend to be vitamin D3 deficient.
Another thing is skin health. The health of our skin is very, very much tied into vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 helps to keep our skin nice and soft and supple and so we have enough depth to our skin, so our skin isn’t so thin and so on and so forth. So that’s something that vitamin D has.
Also, psoriasis is an immunologic, inflammatory issue in the skin that can be triggered by a vitamin D3 deficiency.
So, another thing that vitamin D3 is very much involved in is the utilization of magnesium in our chest. So that involves our heart and our lungs, including the bronchioles.
There’s a common spasm in a lot of folks called asthma. Asthma is a spasm of the bronchial tubes. So, the smooth muscle of the bronchial spasms and it closes off their airway. We call that asthma, right? Well, asthma is—okay, so it’s this spasm of the bronchioles. That spasm happens when the bronchioles aren’t getting enough magnesium. And it’s vitamin D3 that helps the bronchioles take in that magnesium and utilize it, so they don’t become so spasmodic.
The same is true with our heart. So, our heart doesn’t race in—tachycardia is what we call this, where the heart kind of pumps too fast, right? It spasms, and it becomes—flutters like and you get palpitations, you get tachycardia and things like that. Vitamin D3 helps the heart pick up magnesium, so it pumps consistently instead of fluttering and so on and so forth.
So, if you’re having some of those types of things, we could go back to—we might look at the vitamin D3 correcting a deficiency there.
So lastly our last area that we see vitamin D3 deficiency pop up is mental health. Depression, in particular, is one of the areas that we see vitamin D3 deficiency becoming a consistent contributing factor to. And what we’ve found is vitamin D3 has such a good regulating effect on our hormones and keeping our hormones level. We don’t have the hormonal fluctuations too high or too low that can tailspin people into a depression.
So, by using the vitamin D3, making sure we have enough vitamin D3 in our system, helps prevent or reduce the experience of depression by regulating our hormones. When our hormones are regulated, we feel better. We’re less likely to become depressed.
I hope that explains vitamin D3, signs and symptoms of deficiency. So, we have all these different areas. We have cardiovascular, respiratory, immunologic, reproductive, mental; all these different areas that vitamin D3 deficiencies will show up and cause issues.
