Introducing INSPIRED Health Journeys with Jonathan

Jonathan Hunsaker: Thank you for watching. Jonathan here with Organixx, with some very exciting news. We’re about to launch a brand-new initiative called Inspired Health Journeys. Now this is going to be a video series, where yes, I’m going to share a little bit more about my health journey. More importantly, I’m going to share about my team’s health journey. We have a lot of people on our team that have overcome some great feats to just get healthier.

More importantly, though, I want to interview you. I want to hear your health stories. What have you overcome? What have you accomplished? Have you beat cancer? Have you reversed diabetes? Have you lost an extra 10 pounds that you’ve been fighting to get off? Have you switched to eating fully organic, non-GMO? Are you meditating more? Are you exercising more? Like what can you share about your health journey that’s going to help somebody else?

You see, we live in a world right now, where you’ve got a lot of news media that just gives a bunch of doom and gloom, and “The world’s ending,” and there’s problems here, and there’s problems there. When really, the world is getting better. We’re just not hearing more about it. And I want to do my part in sharing inspirational stories.

The other thing is, not everything that works for me is going to work for you. Not everything that works for certain people on my team is going to work for you. But I can guarantee there’s things that others are doing in the world that will work for you. And the best way for me to help you get healthier is to bring you their stories, to share their secrets on what’s worked with them. And hopefully, it can work with you.

So, with that said, I want to hear your story. Just email me at [email protected]. Just send me an email, and you don’t need to send a long, 10-page report. Just tell me a little bit about your story. Tell me who you are, tell me where you are health-wise, or where you were health-wise at the beginning of your journey, and tell me where you are now, or tell me how you got to where you are in just a few paragraphs.

I really actually don’t want to read too much, because what I’d like to do is then schedule you to do an interview, and we can just do it right from your home or do it right here from my house as well. We’ll get on a Skype video interview, or a Zoom video interview, something very easy. And we’ll just have a conversation for 10-15-20 minutes.

I’ll ask you some questions, you’ll share your story, and then I’m going to share it with our 200,000+ listeners. I’m going to share it with the people that come and visit our site and put it on our YouTube channel and on Facebook, to hopefully inspire others through your story, through your triumphs, to get healthier themselves.

Now listen, don’t feel like you have to have had a great feat, either. Like you didn’t have to beat cancer, or reverse diabetes. You didn’t—you don’t even have to be at your final “goal.” Just share your story on what you’ve been through and what you’ve learned.

And like all of us, we’re still on our journeys to health. I’m still on my journey to health. I don’t know that I’ve met anybody who’s achieved optimum, perfect health. Anybody that I’ve met, no matter how fit, no matter how much they exercise, no matter how clean they eat, are still trying to do better and trying to do more.

So, please don’t get caught in the trap that you’re not far enough along, or that you haven’t done enough yet, or that you need to just do a little bit more before you can share your story.

Also, don’t feel like your story has to include any of our supplements, or anything that we’ve ever talked about, because it’s not about our supplements, it’s not about any information that we’ve given; it’s just you and your story.

And it doesn’t have to have been in the last six months. You may have had an amazing feat 20 years ago that you want to share about today, that you know would help somebody.

Maybe you broke free from an addiction, maybe you found a way to really meditate more, or to have a better spiritual balance in your life. What can you share on how you achieved that? Maybe you found a way to have exercise be easier, found a way to exercise that’s more fulfilling for you, or more enjoyable, or less painful on your joints. Maybe you found some tips and tricks on how to eat organic, or how to feed your family organic. Maybe you have some tricks on how to feed kids organic or eat more of their vegetables. I’d love to hear those ones.

Any story is a good story.

What I want to do is I want to get to the journey. I want to hear about the mountain that you were trying to climb, and then I want to hear about your climb up the mountain, even if you’re not at the top yet. Because it’s that journey, it’s that climb, it’s that—it’s that drive that’s inspiring for others.
What we need more in this world, in my opinion, is more inspiration, more hero journeys, and things that can really uplift us, to put us in a better place, put us in a better mood, give us energy, give us inspiration so that we can be more and so that we can achieve more.

Life isn’t easy, right? There’s challenges that we face all the time. And in the mornings, I like to get on YouTube and search for some inspirational videos. Sometimes it’s Anthony Robbins, or David Goggins, or some other Navy SEAL, or somebody else who’s achieved some other feat. Because I like that 10 or 15 minutes in the morning to just get inspired, get my head in a different place, get me ready for the day and the challenges that are coming.

And I’d like to provide more of that with you. I want to interview everyday heroes like you. I want to hear your stories, and hear your inspiration, and I just want to share your story with the world. I think that the world wants to hear it and they need to hear it.

So, if you’re sitting there thinking, “I’ve got something to say,” say it. Send an email, [email protected]. Tell me briefly your story, because I want to save a lot of it for just a raw, real interview. I want to ask you questions and I want to go down that journey with you, and I want to just have it be very real and authentic, and not pre-planned or pre-set.

Marijuana As Medicine with John Malanca "Health Talks"

John: I want people to realize that this is medicine. It doesn’t work for everybody. I don’t want everyone to think that this is the golden pill, the golden ticket, the golden everything.

Jonathan: Like anything out there, right. No [one] diet works for everybody: no prescription med or health supplement.

TeriAnn: We talk about that a lot [crosstalk 00:08:42.]

Jonathan: Everybody’s different.

TeriAnn: Everyone has a different body, different makeup-

Jonathan: Different metabolism.

TeriAnn: Everything works differently for everyone, but this could be something that impacts you in a positive way.

John: It can. The majority of the events that we go to, 99% of them that we speak to are not in the cannabis industry. It’s all integrative oncology, epileptic, pediatric, seniors, geriatric. And I always do this one slide when I speak it, and it’s my favorite slide, it’s a big roll of duct tape, and I said, “People always ask me, does this work?” And I said, “I have the duct tape up here because I don’t want to say it’s like duct tape with a million and one uses, but it truly is.” I’ve seen it with arthritis — the elderly with sleeping. Depression, cancer, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, aids, the list goes on, and on and on, and you can Google these. You can go to Google Scholar. There are more studies done on medical cannabis and the benefits than I think on other topics like this.

Jonathan: Absolutely.

John: So, it’s not something that just popped up three years ago. The CBD phase came into effect, and so it’s been around. It was banned in 1937. Our government banned it. I think just because of the different laws. [I’m not going to go into all of the politics,] I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but they said it was the minorities who used it, and it’s bad, and it’ll have these hoodlums come and take your white daughters away from you.

Jonathan: What I’ve read all about, right, where they gave it the street name marijuana.

John: Totally, right. Marijuana.

TeriAnn: Yup.

Jonathan: Changed it from cannabis to marijuana, and they were able to get laws passed, because people didn’t realize that they were talking about cannabis, right. They thought it was marijuana [crosstalk 00:10:37]

TeriAnn: People are afraid of what they don’t know and understand, and it wasn’t understood.

John: We were those people.

TeriAnn: Yeah.

John: We were those people. And so, I never use the word marijuana. I never use the word cure. I use cannabis. I use it to heal. [I use it because cannabis] kills cancer cells; it’s been proven. You can search it, Google it. Everything’s Google nowadays. Go to Google Scholar. But you will show that THC kills cancer cells while CBD stops the spread, and CBD and THC are cannabinoids. Just like the different varieties in wine, there are a bunch of different varieties in cannabis, with all different. There are 113 different cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, and still, people are discovering more each and every day.

John: The most popular one is THC, which gives a psychoactive effect. Also, right behind there is CBD, which is a non-psychoactive, which you’re hearing a lot of patients using for seizure disorders for children and adults. But if my father-in-law was on a straight CBD regiment, I know for a fact he wouldn’t be here today. THC was needed.

John: Same thing with epileptic children. A lot of these states have CBD only laws, which they’re designed specifically for pediatric children. CBD works for epileptic children, epilepsy. With just straight CBD, it’ll work about 12-15%. Add a minute amount of THC, that number will go up to about 70%. So, THC is needed. I don’t want people to be afraid of thinking that CBD’s the medical portion of the cannabis plant, and THC’s the recreational portion of the cannabis plant.

Jonathan: Well, and let’s just talk about that, because most of us, or at least I’ll speak for myself, right, in my teenage years, the early 20s, right. What I know about cannabis is rolling it up in a joint, smoking it, sticking it in a bowl, smoking it. Nobody was using it for medical stuff then. Now, I mean, all of that’s different. Let’s talk about the difference between medical and recreational use because you don’t have to smoke it, right. You don’t have to roll it up in a joint; you don’t have to smoke it, you don’t have to sit around somewhere and be lazy all day just smoking weed. We’re talking about a totally different thing here.

John: A totally different thing. So, we speak at a lot of retirement communities around the country, and I always ask the seniors how many people have used medical cannabis? And at first, you’d have 8-12% of the room. Now, when I ask that question, it’s like 90% of the room. But I ask the question, how many people think the only way of consuming medical cannabis is via smoking it? And the same thing used to be at 12%. Now, they look at me like, come on, throw us a harder softball question than that one.

John: So, you don’t have to smoke it. There are tinctures under the tongue. There’s topical, great for arthritis. Vaporization, which is another form of ingesting, but not lighting up your bowl, lighting up the flower material. Some people use it for suppositories. Now, they have patches, transdermal patches that you can put on your wrist, or your ankle, or your neck that will bring in the different types of cannabinoids. There’s a lot of different companies that have different types of … just like with your Organixx products, you have a line. So, they have a different line of different cannabis products.

Sticking to a Healthy Diet with Susan Peirce Thompson: "Health Talks"

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: We are living in the dark ages around food. I don’t know if you guys remember the movie, Forest Gump? Did you see that movie, right?

TeriAnn Trevenen: Yeah.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: And when Forest is a little boy, and he’s seeing the doctor, and he’s saying about his crooked spine and stuff, and the doctor’s got a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Do you know that scene? That’s the state of our society around food right now, where we are becoming overweight and obese at breathtaking, gobsmacking, horrifying rates.

Our kids are destined to have Type 2 diabetes at levels that we’re going to be watching this generation of kids have legs amputated and go—and be going blind in their 30s and 40s at mass numbers. And financially, as a society, we can’t afford it. Like the heart disease and diabetes and stuff, we’re about to go bankrupt on a global scale because of how we’re eating.

 And we’re still at the point where if you try to stay “No, thank you,” to pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, people give you a hard time, like you’re some sort of ridiculous version of a like overzealous, like “Nobody diets on Thanksgiving, come on.” It’s like in 1950, and you’re trying to say “No, thank you,” to a cigarette, or 1970, and you’re trying to say “No, thank you,” to a drink on New Year’s Eve.

 Now I haven’t had a drink in a long time. Nobody harasses me on New Year’s Eve if I try to stay “No, thank you,” to a drink. If I say, straight up, “No, thanks. I don’t drink,” they go and find me some sparkling water to put in my champagne glass, right? They’re cool. But if I try to say, “I don’t eat sugar,” on Thanksgiving, they give me a hard time, like I’m being ridiculous, right?

TeriAnn Trevenen: Well, and nobody wants to talk about the fact, we’ve talked about this multiple times on different episodes about food not even being real anymore. A lot of the food that people are eating is not even food.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Right.

TeriAnn Trevenen: It’s not food.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Right. Just because it’s edible doesn’t make it food.

TeriAnn Trevenen: Right.

Jonathan Hunsaker: Well, and it’s the whole fat-free movement, right?

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Right.

Jonathan Hunsaker: That I think has also moved a lot of this faster, right? To get rid of the fat, we just added a bunch more sugar.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Yeah.

Jonathan Hunsaker: And so, it’s made, so…

TeriAnn Trevenen: The chemicals—

Jonathan Hunsaker: That’s for another episode that we will do in a little bit about sugar addiction. But let’s get back to the holidays because I think it’s a very relevant point, right? That—and I, I’m not shy about it, I smoked for 20 years. I was very unhealthy. I quit smoking close to five years ago. Anybody that knows me now, like would never judge. When I say “No, I don’t smoke,” or anything like that, they’re not going to try to push a cigarette on me. That would be absurd, right? The same thing with somebody who drinks, or you say “No, I don’t drink,” or “I’m sober.” It would be absurd for you to push a drink on that person.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Yeah.

Jonathan Hunsaker: But we’ll push sugar.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Yeah, food.

Jonathan Hunsaker: We’ll push crap on people without, without any second thought.

Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson: Without even knowing we’re doing it, yeah.

Jonathan Hunsaker: And a lot of times, it’s Aunt Jane, that’s 50 pounds overweight…

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Yeah, totally.

Jonathan Hunsaker:—that’s pushing it on you, that’s not healthy. And you’re trying to get healthy. But it makes her feel like crap because you’re drawing a line in the sand and you’re trying to be healthy, and it’s like “Oh no, well, if I’m going to be unhealthy, I want to bring everybody down with me.”

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: And a lot of what I do, and the Bright Line Eating Approach that I teach, is I  help people navigate those social situations with their families, with the Aunt Jane who has baked something gluten-free and/or—whatever, out of spelt flour and agave syrup, or whatever, and she’s handing you these baked goods, and she’s like “I know you’re on a special thing…”

I’m not going to eat it. How do you language that to her? How do you get through the family? Because breaking bread together is a very primal thing, right? And how do you keep your relationships intact? How do you stay close to the people that you want to be close to? Jonathan, so okay, right here, right? I’m in your home.

And last night, we were on the phone, and I said “Let’s talk a little bit about the food for tomorrow because I just went to Whole Foods and I got all my food. I’ve got enough food to like get my dinner for tomorrow.” And you’re like “Well, I got this and that and the other.” And now, I have a choice point of like am I going to eat what you’re serving? Am I going to break bread with you in your home, eating your food?

And I decided to because you were—you told me what you were serving, and it was like foods I eat, right? But there is this sort of dance, this negotiation that has to happen when you decide to swim upstream from society’s expectations around food and not go with the healthy—with the unhealthy flow of food products that everybody else is eating. You decide you’re only going to eat whole, real food, in whatever way you want to spin that, and there are relationships to navigate.

7 Steps to Cleanse & Detox Your Body Daily

The pace of life makes most of us feel stressed, frazzled, and just plain exhausted at the best of times. Then, whether it’s tackling major life changes, the busy holiday season, providing care for others, or simply getting through everyday life, this all can lead to unhealthy habits and the feeling that a detox might be just the thing.

But how do you cleanse and detox your body without spending hours doing research or breaking the bank? Detoxing doesn’t have to be complicated. One clever way to help your body’s own natural detoxification systems is to add some simple detox practices into your life on a daily basis.

What Does Detox Mean?

Detoxification refers to helping your body “clean out” your internal organs to rid them of bad bacteria, poisons, pollutants, and especially food waste.

Granted, your body is detoxifying itself all of the time. After all, that is part of the job description for the colon, lungs, kidneys, lymph glands, skin, and especially the liver.

However, with everything toxic that’s in our environment, combined with what we’re slathering on ourselves and ingesting, it’s a good idea to give your organs a helping hand periodically.

Focus on These 7 Key Areas for the Best Detox Cleanse

If you want to cleanse and detox your body the easy way, start small and take tiny steps in each of the seven broad categories listed below. If you’re consistent, over time you will establish healthy detoxification habits that will stay with (and benefit) you for a lifetime.

#1 – WHAT YOU EAT.

Let’s start with the basics. Your diet can either add to your toxic load or help you detoxify from it. Whole foods are what you are aiming for to help your body eliminate toxins. Greens like celery, spinach, parsley, kale, and  cilantro contain fiber, phytonutrients, and chlorophyll (the substance that makes plants green).

Chlorophyll is especially great for detoxification since it cleanses the blood, is a super anti-inflammatory [1], and can bind with heavy metals. It also protects against DNA damage caused by Aflatoxin-B1 (AFB1) [2], which has been linked to liver cancer. [Note: Aflotoxins are cancer-causing substances produced by certain types of mold and are commonly found in peanuts, grains, corn, and cottonseed meal.]

And don’t forget fiber! Getting enough soluble and insoluble fiber in your diet every day is essential for pulling toxins out of the assortment of healthy foodsgut and cleaning the colon.

A 2015 study [3] published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that people who simply ate 30 grams of fiber every day lost more weight and stabilized their blood pressure more than those who engaged in complicated dietary changes.

What You Can Do Now: Crowd out junk food slowly by focusing on your main meal of the day. Whether you consider this breakfast, lunch, or dinner, make sure you add a healthy amount of green vegetables to your plate.

If you don’t like salads, try steamed veggies sprinkled with a little sea salt and some extra virgin olive oil. Another option is to replace a meal with a nutrient-dense smoothie that includes healthy ingredients such as wild blueberries and broccoli sprouts.

#2 – WHAT YOU DRINK.

Besides eating healthy foods, drinking enough fresh, filtered water is absolutely vital for detoxification. Think of your bloodstream and intestines as a plumbing system. It takes water to flush all that bad stuff out of your body and down the drain.

Water is especially helpful for the kidneys since these glands need it to get rid of certain waste products. Make sure you drink only fresh, filtered, fluoride-free [4] water.

A good tip if plain water isn’t your thing is to add healthy substances to your water glass and turn them into detox waters. A very basic detox water is a little lemon juice added to 8 ounces of water first thing in the morning, which can help with alkalinity.

Plop some cucumber or a few watermelon slices in your water glass for a refreshing and hydrating treat.

To go for the big guns when it comes to health, try some apple cider vinegar (ACV) diluted in water first thing in the morning. Besides its amazing detox effects, ACV is chock full of vitamins and minerals [5], helps balance gut bacteria, and is amazingly immune-supportive. It also has antimicrobial and antifungal effects [6].

What You Can Do Now: For the next week, try drinking a tall glass of water first thing in the morning. If you want a real health boost, add a little bit of ACV to it. Start with a teaspoon and work up to a tablespoon or two in 8 ounces of water upon rising. Take note of the difference this one change can make in your overall energy levels throughout the day.

#3 – GO ORGANIC.

Going organic as much as possible in what you eat and drink can be a huge step towards living a low-toxin life.

A general rule of thumb for clean eating is to steer clear of commercially-raised meats and dairy.

According to the advocate organization Consumer Reports [7], a whopping 80% of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used for livestock. In addition, commercial dairy may contain high levels of cancer-causing dioxins, since they are mostly stored in animal fat.

The World Health Organization found that the majority of human exposure to dangerous dioxins comes from animal products [8]. If you eat meat and dairy, make sure you get pasture-raised, hormone-free, and organically raised and non-GMO-fed products only.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, be aware of the “Dirty Dozen.” A current list is provided annually by the consumer safety organization, the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

What You Can Do Now: Go online and check out EWG’s current “Dirty Dozen” list [9] now (some of the foods on the listing can change from year to year). Then, make a point the next time you shop to go only organic for these particular fruits and vegetables.

#4 – HOW MUCH YOU EAT.

Wise individuals through the ages have recommended eating less and going on fasts to clean out the body and boost both physical and mental energy. Nowadays, research continues to pour in about the benefits of calorie restriction as well as routinely spending some time not eating at all.

The connection between fasting and detoxification is clear. This is a way of breaking down and getting rid of damaged cells, which are then used as recycled energy.

Studies show that fasting can rid the body of unwanted pathogens, improve brain health, and regulate metabolism.

Fasting is a great way for your body to “clean house”… and the best part is it’s free!

As it turns out, you don’t need to spend days sucking on ice cubes to gain the health benefits associated with fasting. “Intermittent Fasting” (IF) also stimulates autophagy. Intermittent fasting refers to alternating times for eating and not eating. Many individuals adopt the 16/8 rule. They fast for sixteen hours, including sleep time, and eat only during an eight-hour window (noon to 8 pm, for example).

A 2017 study conducted by the University of California, San Diego, found that intermittent fasting improved

“(a) circadian biology, (b) the gut microbiome, and (c) modifiable lifestyle behaviors, such as sleep.”

As far back as the early 1980s, researchers at City Hospital in Baltimore found that IF increases lifespan [10].

What You Can Do Now:  Start with a food journal. Write down what you eat for one day, then reflect on it. Were there times that you ate even though you weren’t hungry? Perhaps you reached for that bag of chips because you were stressed or just bored?

Being aware of our eating patterns as they are right now is the first step in changing them. After a few days of observing what you eat, experiment with extending your non-eating time a little.

If you have hypothyroidism or adrenal fatigue, take it slow and monitor your energy. Be sure to seek the advice of your healthcare provider before you start if you have either one of these conditions.

#5 – HOW YOU MOVE.

Besides what you eat, getting enough physical activity is probably THE BEST thing you can do to keep your body detoxifying naturally every day. It may be hard to see the connection at first. Take a look at the links between exercise and detox, however, and you’ll be convinced:

What Can You Do Now: Haven’t exercised in a while? Start slowly by committing to take a brisk walk around the block at least two times this week. Even a 15-minute jaunt on your lunch break can do wonders to get you moving again. Note the difference this little bit of movement may have on your overall energy level for the rest of the day.
